Following Avraham’s Footsteps to the Land of Israel

Making Aliyah follows in Avraham’s footsteps. There is a great mitzvah in living in Israel, as written in the Bible after God promised Abraham the Land of Israel and instructed him to go there:

“The LORD said to Abram, ‘Go forth from your native land and from your father’s house to the land that I will show you.’” — Genesis 12:1

“Arise, walk about the land, through its length and its breadth, for I give it to you.” — Genesis 13:17

🕊️ Understanding the Aliyah Journey

Aliyah is a step-by-step process, and preparing properly helps ensure your move to Israel is as smooth and stress-free as possible.

Your first step is registering with Nefesh B’Nefesh, who work in cooperation with the Jewish Agency and help you access all the Aliyah benefits and services you are entitled to. For more tools and guidance, see Aliyah Resources.

The more you educate yourself about the Aliyah bureaucracy, the easier your experience and integration will be.

📄 Begin the Process Early

There is a significant amount of paperwork involved, and you should begin preparing about ten months before your expected arrival.

You will be asked to upload copies of relevant documents, which help determine your eligibility and status with the Jewish Agency. After applying through Nefesh B’Nefesh, they will arrange a meeting with a Shaliach — a representative of the Jewish Agency.

The Jewish Agency will issue your official Aliyah approval, while Nefesh B’Nefesh supports you throughout the process.
For step-by-step planning, visit the Aliyah Timeline.

🏢 Applying Through the Jewish Agency

If you prefer, you can apply directly through the Jewish Agency. Their Global Service Center will guide you through every stage.

You can reach them by submitting their online form. Their trained professionals help with any questions or concerns.

Once registered, they assist with:

  • Collecting and submitting your documents
  • Assigning a consultant to guide your progress
  • Arranging your visa and immigration paperwork
  • Booking your free, one-way Aliyah flight

If you plan to buy a home upon arrival, see our Mortgages in Israel page for expert assistance from Asaf.

✈️ Take a Pilot Trip Before You Move

We strongly recommend taking a pilot trip around six months before your Aliyah.
This is your opportunity to:

  • Explore potential communities (see Towns & Cities)
  • Visit neighborhoods and compare locations
  • Tour properties (browse Properties for Sale)
  • Check out schools, shuls, and community centers (see Community)
  • Understand transportation and cost of living
  • Build clarity about where you want to live before making Aliyah

A pilot trip helps you approach your move with confidence and realistic expectations.
